Children with developmental delays, autism, language disorder and intellectual disability often present with difficulties understanding language (e.g. difficulties understanding what has been said to them).

Children with receptive language difficulties often have trouble understanding and comprehending what has been said to them, understanding instructions, understanding different concepts, understanding spoken paragraphs and understanding the relationship between words.

The fundamental skills to learn to develop receptive language are as follows:

  1. Build your child’s understanding of a range of concepts
  2. Build your child’s vocabulary
  3. Build your child’s understanding and ability to follow instructions (from simple to more complex)
